Windows Virtual PC is pretty slick for having virtual machines on a Windows 7 computer. I use it for multiple Linux virtual environments including Backtrack and CentOS on a regular basis. One issue you may run into is that your wireless network card will likely not work in Linux so you will be required to use shared networking (NAT) instead. Below is information on what you will need to do to get shared networking (NAT) operational in Backtrack Linux.
This is really easy to do but it will be different for Windows OS’s configured in Windows Virtual PC and Linux/Unix OS’s configured in Windows Virtual PC. For instance Windows XP Mode run from Windows Virtual PC will allow you to easily move the mouse between your desktop and the Windows XP Mode Virtual PC without skipping a beat. When you try to do the same thing within a Linux Windows Virtual PC or a Unix Windows Virtual PC this will not be the case because the Windows Virtual PC integration features are not available to anything but Windows Operating Systems at this time. Unfortunately EclipseCrossword is only available for Windows so you cannot install it directly on OSX on a Macintosh computer without the use of third party software. This leaves you a couple options if you only need to view the .ECW files including installing EclipseCrossword via third party software on the Macintosh or have someone with a Windows computer convert the ECW file to a format you can view more easily on your Mac. Below I describe each option in more detail.
I recently installed Windows Virtual PC on my Windows 7 laptop and so far really like using it for virtual machines. One thing that I needed to change after the initial installation was to assign more available memory to the virtual machine which I initially thought I could do from within the XP Mode virtual machine as displayed in the below image.
