There are quite a few articles on how to do this around the internet but I noticed the other day that we did not have one so I decided to make a quick post on how to do this. In previous versions of Windows such as XP all you had to do was press F8 at boot time and the administrator account icon would appear on the log on screen so that administrative tasks could be preformed. This is not the case in Windows Vista or Windows 7. Below I will show how to enable the Administrator account using a elevated command prompt.

A friend of mine also got a new laptop recently that is also running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit OS. He ran into an interesting problem earlier where he was being notified about a service that Windows 7 Action Center was recommending he take action on. The issue was when he attempted to modify the settings that control how Action Center notifies you about Security Messages all of them were greyed out except for the UAC (User Account Control). Below I describe what would cause the Action Center Security Messages configuration to be greyed out and how to make those settings available again.

When attempting to uninstall the Ask Toolbar on a laptop earlier I ran into numerous issues including receiving an error 1730. The error 1730 displayed even though I was logged into the Windows Vista laptop as an administrator and following the proper directions for uninstallation. Below I describe numerous steps to take that will guarantee that the Ask Toolbar application is uninstalled including removing any leftover Ask Toolbar files.

Turning off UAC or User Account Control in Windows Vista is easy but a couple items should be considered before turning this feature off.

Considerations:

You should only turn UAC off if you are the only user on this computer.
You should only turn off UAC if your company policy allows you to do so.
Again you should only turn this off if nobody else is going to have unsupervised access to your PC.
You have administrator access to this computer.
