Earlier today while responding to a comment in an older article I requested that the person leaving the comment provide information to show what repositories were enabled in YUM. I figured printing out the configured YUM repositories could be useful to others so below is an example command and example output to display what YUM repos are configured on a CentOS Linux server.
RPMForge: Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el5/en/mirrors-rpmforge error was [Errno 12] Timeout: urlopen error timed out
Earlier today I was having trouble on one of my development servers reaching the RPMForge repository which I use on CentOS Linux servers. I believe the issue to be some form of odd network issues either at the development servers location, on the repos end, or somewhere in between. Regardless of the issue at hand there is a work around that can be used which is described in more detail below.
The rar and unrar packages are not available from the default yum repositories on CentOS Linux so you will need to install the rpmforge repo to install these packages via yum. Read this article for steps on how to install the rpmforge repository on CentOS Linux. Once installed you can install rar and unrar using the syntax below.
The rar command can be useful on Linux to not only compress a file but also split the file into multiple parts during the compression. This will make the files easier to transfer to other servers or easier for other people to download. First rar needs to be installed which can done on CentOS using the directions below. After that we describe how to easily compress and break a file into multiple chunks using one simple rar command.
Yum Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: dag. Please verify its path and try again
When updating CentOS or RedHat via yum its possible to receive an error similar to the below. This error will cause an issue where yum will not work even though as described below the issue is typically isolated to one yum repository.
Error:Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: dag. Please verify its path and try again
