I decided to make a quick post on how to set a trusted root CA to untrusted in Mac OSX. As some people may or may not know, one of the root CA authorities was recently hacked and several rouge certificates were issued including one with a domain name of .google.com. Now DigiNotar, which is the company in question, claims that the have revoked all the rouge certificates and all is well. However, me being involved in infosec and security I would rather not take any chances so I decided to set DigiNotar to a “trust never” level on my machine for the time being. Below I will outline the few simple steps to do this for any certificate authority on Mac OSX.
The guy at the corner store near my house is always having me do some form of hack on his iPhone or some other random technical project so the other day when I went in to get a pack of smokes it was no surprise that he was asking me about how to upgrade Installous on his iPhone 4. He had Installous version 4 installed but I believe that Installous version 4.1.1 had been released and that is what he wanted to upgrade to. Easy enough however when I attempted to upgrade the package via Cydia it errored out. Below I describe how to get the new Installous installed.
I had been wanting to jailbreak my iPhone 4 for quite awhile but since I had upgraded to Apple iOS release 4.2.1 there was not an untethered jailbreak available at the time and since I typically turn my iPhone completely off I didn’t want to deal with the untethered jailbreak. So needless to say when GreenPois0n rc5 was released I was pretty excited. GreenPois0n rc5 made it extremely easy to jailbreak iPhone’s running iOS 4.2.1. After running it for around a month now though I noticed that I really don’t install enough applications outside of what is available via the iTunes App Store to warrant the jailbreak and especially because I have personally noticed that with my iPhone jailbroken it had slowed down a bit. Not only had it slowed down but my battery appeared to be draining much quicker which I assume was from more processes running. I made the decision a couple days ago to roll back to the stock iPhone 4.2.1 firmware to see if my phone started running more efficiently. Below are instructions for rolling back the GreenPois0n firmware on an iPhone 4 to the Apple iOS 4.2.1 firmware release.
The question of how to sync apps between iTunes and your iPhone has come up numerous times before in the comments section of other articles I have written related to iPhone’s or iPod Touches so I figured it was time to write an article to describe how to accomplish this. You need to first transfer the apps downloaded directly to your iPhone to iTunes before syncing. Below I describe the warning message that will have you asking this question followed by how to transfer the apps from the iPhone to iTunes before actually syncing with iTunes.
A friend had me jailbreak their iPhone 3G the other day and once that was completed he later asked if I could install Installous as well. Installous is an application on a jailbroken iDevice that will allow you to search and install applications similar to the Apple iTunes store. Follow the directions below to install Installous from within the Cydia application.
