Backtrack creepy Error – ImportError: No module named osmgpsmap

When attempting to launch creepy via the Backtrack menu (Backtrack > Information Gathering > Network Analysis > OSINT Analysis > creepy) the starting creepy window will show in the taskbar however it simply disappears after a couple seconds without any action. If you investigate the menu item you will see that the menu item executes creepymap and when you attempt to execute creepymap you will see some Python errors. Below the error is described in more detail along with instructions on how to get creepy working properly.

sqlscan Error: sqlscan.py:8: DeprecationWarning: the sets module is deprecated

Backtrack Linux is full of really great tools including SQLScan which is a SQL Scanner that provides the ability to query Google for vulnerable hosts and extract MD5 hashes from the results. Unfortunately sqlscan.py was written for Python 2.3 or Python 2.4 and has not been maintained to be compatible with Python 2.6 which is the current version of Python installed on Backtrack Linux 5 R3. Backtrack 5 R3 is based off of Ubuntu 10.04 which had a release date of April, 2010 so needless to say some packages are out of date. It should be noted though that there is a lot to be said for stability in your operating system versus bleeding edge capabilities and I am sure when the time is correct the Backtrack team will be releasing a new version of Backtrack based on a newer version of Ubuntu.

smbclient Backtrack Linux – sh: line 0: cd: /pentest/python/impacket-examples/: No such file or directory

When attempting to launch smbclient via the Backtrack menu in Backtrack Linux version 5 release 3 you will receive an error stating there is no such file or directory. It appears some of the paths have changed between Backtrack Linux releases and the menu item for smbclient was not updated. I personally prefer smbclient from the command line however if you like the smbclient.py python script then fixing it is easy as noted in the details below.

RightScale Stop Recipe From Being Used In RightScript, GIT /tmp/ssh.key.sh

If you have created a custom RightScript in the RightScale interface that uses git to clone a repository and you are running that RightScript on boot following the RightScale git_repo recipe then you likely are having issues. The problem appears to stem from the fact that the environment variables are not completely cleaned up as expected including $GIT_SSH and possibly others. I have a work around noted below along with a line you can enter in your RightScript to clear the $GIT_SSH ENV variable as well.

The program sqldict.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close

When running SQLDict on Backtrack Linux it is possible to run into an issue where SQLDict crashes when loading the password file. The issue appears to be that the SQLDict executable is expecting the password file to have a file ending on it no matter what it is and if not it causes SQLDict and Wine to crash on BT5 r3. Below the error is displayed along with a work around for the problem.
