How to Search For Patterns In Files That Are Compressed With gzip or gunzip

It can be beneficial sometimes to search for patterns in files on a Linux server that have been compressed with gzip instead of having to uncompress each file to search through it. A good example of this if typically in log rotation you rotate the logs and compress the older log files so if you are troubleshooting an issue and need to search for an error in older log files you could use the method below to search the compressed log files to match a pattern without having to uncompress each log file.

How to Modify the timestamp (Date and Time) of a File on Linux

There are certain circumstances where you may want to modify the date and time of a file on Linux. In my case I was testing a cronjob that moved and deleted files older than a certain date and testing it was much easier after modifying the date of the files.

The command to use for modifying the date and time of a file is called touch. To modify the timestamp of a file issue one of the below commands. The file used in each of the examples below is named testfile.

How To Remove Cisco Systems VPN Adapter From Network Connections

If you have recently removed the Cisco Systems VPN client from your Windows XP computer you may notice that it does not always uninstall the network adapter connection it created during install. When viewing your Network Connections you will notice there is still a Cisco Systems VPN Adapter connection that looks similar to the typical Ethernet adapter on your computer. You would think that the ability to remove this item should be as simple as right clicking the adapter in question and selecting Delete from the drop down however  this is not the case. Don’t worry removing it is easy but you must do it from the Device Manager instead of the Network Connections interface.

Skype: Number Not Recognised. Go to the Call Phones Tab to Enter the Number and Send SMS.

You can SMS message people using Skype though it ends up costing money per text message so I rarely use the feature. To be able to SMS message contacts or call contacts in your Skype contact list you used to have to synchronize these contacts via Outlook but now you can also enter “Phone Number” only contacts in Skype. If the number is not entered properly in the Outlook contact then Skype will tell you that it does not recognise the number and require you to dial it manually or you could fix the number to allow for one click dialing of this contact or for you to be able to SMS message this Skype contact. The error is shown in the below image at the bottom of the Skype window.

How to Purchase DirecTV Pay Per View Video On Demand Movies Without a Phone Line

When my DirecTV receivers were initially installed they didn’t have a phone line attached to them however they also did not have Ethernet attached to them. The default a installation technician will use is to have them in the DirecTV system as having a phone line attached. The phone line being attached allows for you to purchase PPV (Pay Per View) movies, VoD (Video on Demand) movies, and used to allow for upgrading of the receiver software. Since I never had a phone line attached to the receiver I would always order my PPV movies online. It also appears that all software updates now happen over the satellite signal to keep your receiver up to date. I always wished I was able to purchase Pay Per View movies directly from my remote to save the hassle of signing into directv.com and having to purchase the movie that way.
