I downloaded My Backup Pro to use as a secondary backup on my Google Nexus 7 device which is running Android 4.2. When attempting to configure the the email address and password associated to the My Backup Pro account it continued to reject the information I was providing. Initially I thought the password must be too long, which it was, but even after shortening it to the allowed fifteen characters it continued to reject my settings. It ended up being the email address I used not being accepted because it included a “-“. Below I describe a bit more and provide a screenshot of the screen in question.
My Backup Pro Not Accepting Email And Password:
When attempting to configure My Backup Pro for the first time the password and email address I was entering was being rejected. I ended up having two different issues but the second one is what stumped me for a moment. The configuration screen in question is displayed below as an example image.
My Backup Pro For Nexus 7 Android 4.2.1: Please Set Your Password Screen
After continuing to change my password which initially was too long I ended up realizing the issue was the email address. My Backup Pro has a bug where it will not accept email addresses that include a “-“. So if your email address happens to be something like data1-data2@example.com then it will continue to be rejected at least at the time of this post. Also make sure your password does not include special characters and that it is not more than fifteen characters long.
Email And Password Information For My Backup Pro On Android 4.2:
- Email Address: Cannot include a “-” so signup for a Gmail account if necessary or create a nickname for your current Gmail account if it includes a hyphen.
- Password: Must be between four and fifteen alpha-numeric characters long.
I have emailed support@rerware.com who is the development company that makes the software. If anyone else has run into this or other bugs with My Backup Pro please post a comment below.
02-04-2013 – Received Update From Rerware Support:
Me: “I downloaded My Backup Pro for my Google Nexus 7 running Android 4.2.1 today and when attempting to set my email address and password it was continually rejected. My email address has a (-) in it which I believe was the issue as it continued to be rejected. After changing to a Gmail address without a hyphen it allowed me to signup without issue.
Just wanted to make you aware. Thanks for the software!”
Rerware Support: “Yes our server will not accept either the _ or – characters in the password. Most servers will not validate an email with these characters.”
Me: “I have used hundreds if not thousands of pieces of software and this is the first one I have used that had an issue with a “-” in an email address since that is technically a valid character for email addresses. It is understandable if you do not want to fix it and I was simply attempting to point out the issue.”
Rerware Support: “We do appreciate the effort to let us know, and im very sorry this is not something we can fix from our end. Our server provider sets these rules and we cant alter to change them.”
Recap To Rerware Support’s Response To Bug In My Backup Pro:
Needless to say I was a little surprised by the first response. Keep in mind that this is a piece of software I actually paid for. Glad they followed up with the second statement as that makes the scenario completely understandable.
