If you decide to remove the default kismet install on Backtrack Linux so you can then compile kismet from source you will be missing some functionality. One of the bits of functionality not installed by default on Backtrack 5 release 3 is the PCRE Regex Filters. You can easily enable this functionality by installing a single package before you run the kismet configure command when compiling the source.
PCRE Regex Filters For Kismet On Backtrack Linux:
When you install kismet from source on Backtrack Linux there will be some functionality missing including the PCRE Regex Filters. You will notice this when you are running the configure command before actually compiling kismet on your Backtrack installation as shown in the below example output.
PCRE Regex Filters Capability Not Available For Kismet:
- Configuration complete:
- Compiling for: linux-gnu (i686)
- C++ Library: stdc++
- Installing as group: root
- Man pages owned by: man
- Installing into: /usr/local

The above is the configurations summary which is output at the end of running the configure command in the kismet source directory on Backtrack. As you can see above the PCRE Regex Filters show disabled by the print out of no. The good news is you can enable the PCRE Regex Filters by installing a single package named libpcre3-dev. Below we show an example of installing libpcre3-dev on BT5r3.

As you can see in the above output the libpcre3-dev package is small and installs quickly. After installing this package run the configure command again the kismet source directory as shown in the below kismet configure output summary to enable the PCRE Regex Filters for kismet.
