Tonight I was asked the question of how to remove the hard drive icons from displaying on a Mac desktop. Pretty much anything on a Mac is customizable so removing the hard drive icons from the OSX desktop is not to hard to accomplish. Follow the directions below to remove the Mac hard drive icons from the desktop.
Remove Hard Drive Icons From Mac Desktop:
- Launch Finder Menu: First minimize everything that is open so you have a clear view of your desktop and then click on the desktop so you now see the Finder menu in the top navigation bar as shown in the below example image.
- Open Finder Preferences: Now click Finder in the top navigation menu and select Preferences from the Finder drop down menu as shown in the below example image.
Once you click on Preferences the below Finder Preferences configuration window will display.
- Select Mac Desktop Display Icons: Now uncheck the items you do not want to display on the Mac desktop including Hard Disks, External Disks, and/or CD’s, DVD’s, and iPods as shown in the below example image.
The change is immediate so you will be able to see which icons you have removed from the desktop since we first minimized all open windows. Once you are done simply click the X in the top left corner of the Finder Preferences configuration window.
Thats it. If you ever want the hard drive icons to display on the desktop in the future simply follow the directions in the reverse order.
