I have put together some previous articles on upgrading the firmware on your Linksys WRT600N wireless router using various versions of DD-WRT. One thing I have not included in the articles is the specific DD-WRT download location for the firmware branch that I prefer which is called BrainSlayer. So below is a brief explanation of DD-WRT FTP structure where the WRT600N firmware is located.
DD-WRT FTP Server: Others
The BrainSlayer firmware versions are located under “others” from the root of the DD-WRT FTP server which you can browse to in your favorite browser by clicking this link. Once you click on this link you will see the various branches that live under “others” as well as some other random stuff such as some BrainSlayer music. The music actually lives underneath the eko sub directory as does the location of the BrainSlayer firmware images.
DD-WRT FTP Server: BrainSlayer
The BrainSlayer firmware location is underneath the “eko” sub directory as mentioned above. Click this link which will show the BrainSlayer firmware versions separated by year. The current years include 2010 and 2011. Typically it is nice to have newer firmware however it is also useful to have access to previous versions if you want to test something or whatever.
DD-WRT FTP Server: Firmware Versions/Dates
Once you select the year you will see sub directories named after firmware release dates and version numbers such as the most recent currently located in the BrainSlayer/2011 directory which is 06-14-11-r17201. This firmware was released on June 14th, 2011 and was release 17201. Click on this link to see the sub directories underneath each firmware version.
DD-WRT FTP Server: Broadcom
After you have selected the year of the firmware and the specific firmware release you want to download which in this case is 2011 and 06-14-11-r17201 respectively then you will see numerous sub directories named after specific wireless devices and also named after specific chipsets such as broadcom which is the sub directory that the WRT600N firmware versions are located underneath. Click on the broadcom directory to have access to the firmware you want for the WRT600N.

You are finally in the directory that contains the firmware versions you can select for Linksys WRT600N wireless router. There are various selections that include different features including mega, mini, std, voip, and vpn.
WRT600N Firmware Descriptions:
- WRT600N Mega: The mega image includes everything that is offered in the DD-WRT firmware versions.
- WRT600N Mini: The mini includes all of the basics but does not include things such as OpenVPN however it does include PPTP VPN support. It also does not include Asterisk support, HotSpot support, and some other items.
- WRT600N STD: This firmware release which is also known as the Standard release includes many of the features of Mega but does not include OpenVPN and some other items.
- WRT600N VoIP: The VoIP release includes many of the STD features but also adds SIPatH/Milkfish. This release does not include OpenVPN.
- WRT600N VPN: The VPN release is also similar to STD however it includes OpenVPN.
For more information on the DD-WRT firmware versions types click here. If you scroll down the page there is a table that includes all of the firmware release types.
You will notice within the broadcom directory the WRT600N firmware release types all include WRT600N in the file names. I personally run the Mega version so I can test various features and the WRT600N has enough memory to handle it.
Finally, someone that actually knows what directory to get the WRT600N from – BROADCOM!
I suspected as much, but couldn’t find out exactly as there were specific builds for other devices.
Thanks!
