Earlier tonight while working on a Windows 7 Ultimate server I needed to reboot the computer to complete some changes made on the server but the Restart/Shutdown capabilities are removed from the start menu for security reasons. Luckily you can still easily reboot Windows 7 remotely when connected via Remote Desktop using the instructions below.
Restart Windows 7 Via Remote Desktop:
- Remote Desktop Ctrl-Alt-End: With the Remote Desktop connection active click Ctrl-Alt-End (Ctrl Key + Alt Key + End) at the same time to open a screen that provides the ability to reboot the computer as shown in the below example image.
- Restart Windows 7 Via Remote Desktop: Now click the up arrow on the right of the red shutdown button in the lower right corner of your Remote Desktop connection as shown in the below example image.
Select Restart from the pop open menu and the Windows 7 computer will immediately reboot.
Your Windows 7 computer will now be rebooting because of the commands issued via Remote Desktop. Make sure that you have set Remote Desktop to start upon reboot!
