Earlier I was doing some work on a Dell Poweredge 2650 with CentOS Linux installed on it which we use for a development server at the shop. The message on the screen had been set awhile back with a joke message but I forgot how it was set so while I was poking around in the BIOS for some floppy disk settings I stumbled across how to modify the message that scrolls across the tiny screen on the front of the Dell PE2650 and wanted to share. Below is more information regarding how to modify the message and what it looks like once it has been modified.
Change The Scrolling Message On A Dell PE2650:
- Enter 2650 BIOS Settings: Hit F2 on the keyboard attached to the server while it is booting up to enter the PE2650 BIOS. When F2 has successfully been clicked the message in the top right corner of the boot screen will display as “Entering Setup” as shown in the example image below.
- Locate PE2650 ESM: Once the BIOS setup screen appears scroll down until you reach the Embedded Server Management line as shown in the below example image.
- Modify Scrolling Message: Click Enter on Embedded Server Management which will open a new configuration window with four configurable lines including Front-Bezel Chassis Intrusion, Front-Panel LCD Options, User-Defined LCD String Line 1, and User-Defined LCD String Line 2. First set the Front-Panel LCD Options to “User-Defined String” and then enter the message you want to display on Line 1 and Line 2 as shown in the below example image.
- Reboot & Verify Message: After making the changes click the Esc key to Exit & Save changes to the BIOS. The server will reboot and when it powers back on the new message should display on the screen on the front of the Dell Poweredge 2650 as shown below.
You are limited to five characters on each line for the message display but that should provide plenty of room for you to come up with something crafty to display on the front of the Dell 2650.
