I recently started using Evernote to store all of the notes I take on a daily basis. This allows me to have a centralized storage location for all of my notes that I can access from multiple devices including many computers, iPhone, iPod Touch, the Internet, and my Blackberry 8320 Curve. I was playing around with all of the different types of notes that you could take from the Blackberry device which included regular text notes, voice notes, camera snapshots, and uploading files.
After I took down a voice note with the Blackberry microphone I synchronized it with Evernote and attempted to listen to the voice note from my laptop Evernote installation. It prompted me to install Real Player to be able to listen to the voice note however I am not a fan of Real Player and decided to find out why something else that was already installed would not play the voice note which had a .AMR ending.
I then downloaded the voice note onto my laptops desktop to see if it would play directly from there. On the desktop it still acted as if it was an unknown file type so I attempted to open it with Quicktime which worked perfectly. If your computer is not familiar with .AMR files then your voice note will look like the below from within the Evernote application.
To make Evernote realize that Quicktime would play these files I needed to change the default application for .AMR files to Quicktime which I was able to do using the instructions below.
- Download .AMR File: If you did not download the voice note from Evernote already do so now and save it to the desktop so you can easily find it.
- Open File Properties: Now open the files properties by right clicking the file and selecting Properties from the pop up menu which will display a window similar to the below.
- Change Default Application: Now modify the Opens With or default application that will open .AMR files by clicking the Change button located near the top of Properties to display the Opens With configuration window as shown below.
- Select Quicktime: Change the default application to Quicktime by selecting it from the Opens With configuration window and then click the OK button to save. Once you have completed these steps exit out of Evernote and restart the application. Your voice notes should now display similar to the below image and will open from the Evernote application interface with Quicktime.
Evernote is a great product that I recommend for anyone who takes any amount of notes on their computer or mobile device.
