When upgrading packages on Ubuntu using the apt-get upgrade command you may notice that some packages are not upgraded. Ubuntu will not upgrade packages that could have a major impact to service on the server such as the kernel, kernel headers, MySQL packages, and various others. The packages are held back by aptitude as a safeguard to keep people from upgrading packages that might keep the server from rebooting or that might corrupt something like a database. Below we show the error in more detail and explain the command that can be run to upgrade the packages that are being held back.
The guy at the corner store near my house is always having me do some form of hack on his iPhone or some other random technical project so the other day when I went in to get a pack of smokes it was no surprise that he was asking me about how to upgrade Installous on his iPhone 4. He had Installous version 4 installed but I believe that Installous version 4.1.1 had been released and that is what he wanted to upgrade to. Easy enough however when I attempted to upgrade the package via Cydia it errored out. Below I describe how to get the new Installous installed.
Upgrading WordPress is typically fairly easy but you have to either upload every single file from the download or you have to weed what has been modified and what has not. Typically a list of modified files is provided by WordPress which makes it easy to follow along and upgrade your WP version however it is a pain to upload every single file in the release. The below article has two main objectives which first is to provide you an easy to read summary of enhancements, resolved bugs, and new features and second will be to provide you a zip file with only the modified files in the WordPress upgrade. We will do our best to provide such an article for all future WP releases within a couple days of the public release.
I have a client with a Cisco 2811 with primarily Cisco 7960 phones configured off of it. Recently hey switched their telecommunications provider but didn’t get a POTS line for the fax machine. I am going to try to configure a PAP2T-NA to convert from SIP to POTS for the fax machine to see if it works but first wanted to make sure he PAP2T-NA had the latest and greatest firmware on it. Upgrading the firmware is really easy with an application that is downloaded with the firmware itself. Follow the directions below to upgrade the firmware on your Linksys PAP2T-NA.
Yesterday I needed to upgrade a single application on CentOS Linux. First I figured out that the application was part of the coreutils RPM package which is currently only available up to version coreutils 5.97-23 on CentOS. The current coreutils package is already up to coreutils 8.5 and upgrading coreutils is near impossible on CentOS because of other package requirements that it needs. Below are instructions on how to download the coreutils source, build the coreutils applications in a new directory, and then upgrade one application.
