As noted in a previous article I was tasked by a client with figuring out why their Retrospect Backup software for Windows was not working properly. Since I was not familiar with Retrospect I had to troubleshoot from the beginning. I started troubleshooting on the Windows 2003 R2 server running Retrospect and was able to easily see the log files showing the errors backing up one of the companies Exchange servers. When I attempted to manually backup a single mailbox on the Microsoft Exchange server I was receiving the same errors. Below I describe the Retrospect backup error and then explain step by step how I was able to resolve the error.

After a had a conflict with Windows 7 Service Pack 1 that really slowed my PC down I decided to scrap my current Windows 7 install and reinstall. So far it is the best decision regarding this laptop that I have made in a long time. Not only are things  running much better but I was able to organize a lot better from the start. I needed to install some third party applications that came with my laptop including Roxio Creator Premier 10.3 which I use for burning ISO images and Dell makes these tasks very easy with the My Dell Downloads site. Initially I attempted to download these applications using my preferred browser which is Google Chrome however I received an error which I explain in detail below as well as how to use Chrome to download items from My Dell Downloads web site.

I have been using a Windows 7 laptop for quite awhile as my daily driver and recently wanted to install Backtrack 4 in a virtual machine so I wasn’t required to dual boot or use a different laptop for BT4. I thought about using VMware as Martin wrote an article a couple months ago about installing Backtrack in a VM on Windows 7 but a couple months ago I discovered Windows Virtual PC during a Windows XP VM install. So far I have been really happy with Windows Virtual PC and decided to try installing Backtrack 4 in a Windows Virtual PC virtual machine. Below are the details on how to setup the Windows Virtual PC virtual machine and then information on how to install Backtrack 4 in that VM.

When using Roxio Creator Premier 2010 to encode a video to DVD format and burn to disc I received an error. I have been burning AVI, MPEG, MP4, Quicktime, and other video formats using this version of Roxio Creator 2010 for some time so I was surprised to receive an error. Initially I thought that the error was caused by file permissions on the file because a friend had provided it to burn and this was the only initial difference that I could find with the video versus other videos that I had burned. Below I describe how to troubleshoot this error and what I eventually did to resolve and move past this error. In the end I was able to burn this video using Roxio Creator 2010.

I was looking to convert some AVI videos I had created recently to DVD so my neighbor could watch the videos using their DVD player but I hadn’t done this in quite awhile so I began the search for some good open source software. After awhile I realized I had purchased a desktop recently and I figured it may have software installed by default that would convert and burn these files for me. Sure enough Roxio Pro was installed and it has a tool called MyDVD that will not only convert from many media files to DVD but it will also burn during that conversion. Below I describe how to create DVD’s from any type of media file using Roxio myDVD.
