Recently a Dell computer running Windows XP Home Edition was dropped off at our computer shop to be repaired. The computer would not boot because it appeared that numerous Windows system files were corrupted. After some initial troubleshooting I booted to the Windows Recovery Console in an attempt to copy backups of the system files to the active locations however when I attempted to issue the copy commands from the Recovery Console I received an error of “Access Denied”. This problem can likely be fixed by running chkdsk as shown below.
Often times when I have Windows XP installations which will not boot one of the first things I will try is a check disk from the recovery console. This will often times fix Windows file problems which are preventing Windows from booting properly. In order to do this you will need a Windows XP installation disc.
I have been really satisfied with the Dell Studio XPS 13 running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit that I purchased at the beginning of the year however recently the C: drive displays dirty on boot thus triggering a chkdsk. The problem is that sometimes the boot screen would simply hang at 1 second left before the chkdsk would run. This would happen regardless of if I hit a key to skip the chkdsk or if I let the chkdsk run. Below I describe some of the things I have done to get around this problem.
My Dell laptop has been claiming there is a hard drive issue for some time however when I reboot and let Windows 7 scan the drive it either doesn’t scan the drive or it scans the drive and still claims there is an issue.
