Hello Daniela,

Not sure about the Verizon insurance. As for the apps they won’t hurt anything but many of them might not work as jailbreaking the phone’s primary purpose is to be able to install cracked apps and for more control of the OS itself.

soo i jailbroke my iphone then after a while i decided it made my iphone slow and just i didnt like alot of things from it .. but i kept the apps i downloaded from intallous .. i was wondering is it bad? like keeping the apps? and also since i unjailbroke it , its under the my verizon insurance again right?

Hello Dru,

Thats alright. Depending on your Windows version the hosts file will be located in different location. When jailbreaking your iPhone it gets modified so when iTunes attempts to contact Apple it goes to localhost instead of to Apple’s servers. Host file location for Windows 7 and Windows Vista below.

On Windows 7 and Windows Vista:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

You will need to open it in your favorite text editor and remove any apple entries but make sure you have administrator permissions. You likely have an entry for gs.apple.com or something similar. The hosts file is what does name to IP address translation locally as it is typically done by DNS servers. You do it locally to trick iTunes when you are in process of jailbreaking your iPhone.

If you have trouble with the above a simple Google search will provide more details.

I’m don’t know what you mean by “host file” – sorry for my lack of understanding :s

I do know that my baseband is the iPad baseband and that I originally jailbroke with redsn0w 09.6b5 then put green pois0n rc 6 over top. I didn’t have any trouble with my gps or anything until I added green pois0n so I’m just trying to get back to the tethered redsn0w

No it will still verofy. Do you still have a modified host file? If so remove the entries for anything related to Apple. The above method definitely works so there must be something unique about your scenario.

I have downloaded the correct IPSW for the 3gs, and I’m attempting the restore for the 5th time, now. I noticed that it feeds me the error message right after completing the verify with Apple. Is it possible that 4.2.1 won’t verify anymore because 4.3 is out?

Hello Dru,

Probably but wanted to verify. :)

Anyhow it is definitely possible to get an error upon restoring. If this happens simply remove the USB cable, power off your iPhone, power the iPhone back on and complete the steps again. It is possible to get this error many times so continue trying. Also make sure you download the IPSW mentioned in the article and restore by selecting that exact IPSW during the restore process. Verify that you have the IPSW for the 3GS and now for another version of the iPhone.

The steps definitely work and sometimes will work first try but other times you may have to try numerous times.
