As of Opera 10 you can set Opera to update automatically, notify of updates only, or to not even check for updates. I don’t use Opera daily however I probably do use it at least once a week for various tasks such as torrent downloads. Recently when I launched Opera it let me know that an update was available and asked if I wanted to download and install. I quickly clicked yes to upgrade Opera but realized that there was another option that was checked to upgrade Opera automatically in the future. I personally like to be notified about upgrades and then run the upgrade myself when it is convenient so I needed to modify this setting back to only notify me of new Opera updates. Below are instructions on how to set Opera web browser to upgrade automatically, notify you of Opera browser updates, or to not even check for new updates available for the Opera web browser.

Modify Opera Web Browser Update Settings:

  1. Opera Preferences: First launch the Opera web browser Preferences configuration window as displayed in the below example image.

    Opera Preferences Configuration

  2. Opera Advanced Preferences: Now click on the Advanced tab located at the top of the Opera Preferences configuration window which will now display the Opera advanced preferences.

  3. Opera Security Preferences: Once the Advanced tab is active a left navigation will display with more options available to be selected. Click on Security in the left navigation to display the Opera Security Preferences configuration window as displayed below.

  4. Opera Update Preference: Now at the bottom of the Opera Security Preferences configuration window will be a setting that can be modified called Auto-update. The Opera Auto-update setting can be set to not check for new updates, notify you of new updates, or to update automatically as displayed in the below image. Set the Auto-update setting to whatever your preference is and then click the OK button at the bottom of the configuration window to save the settings.

Opera will now either update you when new updates are available, not do anything when new updates are available, or update automatically when updates are available.

I had been surprised to see the latest Opera installer during a scan because I knew I had set mine for ‘notification only’ before
