I was hoping to help. There are a few questions I’d have to ask you to give you a proper answer based on what I’ve figured out about getting Chat Logs back thus far.

Number 1. Upon doing this “Permanent Deletion” did you uninstall Skype completely from the computer you were doing it from?
Or did you just remove the tabs from your computer, and try to forget about it or something?

I think “Permanent Deletion” simply means you deactivated the account from use by Skype via their website or something? But that most certainly doesn’t mean that all the conversations you had with Skype aren’t lingering somewhere on your Computer, inside of your AppData file (which is usually a hidden folder), under “Roaming”, and then under “Skype”.

Your account’s username and file of chats, may still be on there ESPECIALLY if you didn’t fully uninstall it =].

But it depends on what you mean by turned on Permanent Deletion. I think I’m understanding you correctly

Hi, What exactly is the Griffin.db? I attempted to make this transfer with out any assistance whatsoever. Downloaded a new version of Skype. Transfered just the Chat sync over, and it didn’t work. Then Copied the chat sync, plus all the setting files that weren’t contained in any named folder (outside of being held in a folder labeled with my Skype Username.

I compared the files that were already on my newest Skype download, against the ones that were held on my old computer & saw that the ones on my older computer were bigger in file size, but the same — ALL EXCEPT…. for one.
Griffin.db.

Griffin.db wasn’t on the blank downloaded Skype copy, and it has the most unusual file name I’ve ever seen… having a man’s name very obviously plastered across this database file…

So what exactly is it? And why is it on my computer, because I’m ready to delete that thing so damn fast, if I can’t get any kind of answer about it lol. Looks way too much like something meant for somebody else other than me, and I can see its on other people’s computers too based on the comments left above — so at least I know its not one of my friends creating a back up of all my chats or anything like that.

I REALLY need your help… I turned on permanent deletion on my skype and so many of my messages were deleted from months ago. Is there ANY way that I can get them back? Please, I really need this answered more than anything :( I’m in such a bad situation right now

It worked, but only after I copied entire *SKYPEUSER* folder to the new place, not just *chatsync* . Using Skype 5.5. Probably something has changed in Skype settings since this answer was posted.

Yes,

After upgrading old Skype to 5.x, it created the *.db files, and main.db is increased to 9MB, so it stores maybe the index of chat information stored in chatsync directory.
So after upgrading the old skype, and copy the user directory to the new computer, the chat history is working.

Hello Laszlo,

It is possible something has changed with the newer versions of Skype since this article was written in Jan. 2010. I would suggest trying older versions of Skype to see if this works. Look for whatever version of Skype was new around Jan. 2010. Hope that helps.

I tried to copy both the chatsync content and total skype folder, but didn’t find my old messages. From XP to Windows 7, Skype version is 5.0.
However this method was working earlier (maybe not with 5.0)
As I can see, it is using main.db, dc.db, griffin.db now, not the same file structure as my XP version.
I tried it with Skype 4.x, but the same result, the chat history doesn’t appear.
