Convert iTunes to MP3

Converting iTunes files or MPEG4 files to MP3 format is easy using the iTunes client. We will want to change the Import Settings which will then allow converting files into the same setting as the Import Settings. Follow the simple steps below and you will be converting your iTunes files to MP3 in no time.

iTunes 8.x or Higher:

  1. Open iTunes:Double click on iTunes to open the application.
  2. Open Preferences: Click “Edit” in the top navigation and choose “Preferences” from the drop down.
  3. Open General Preferences: Verify you are on the “General” tab under preferences and if not click the tab titled “General”
  4. Open Import Settings: Now click the “Import Settings” button which can be found about half way down of the General tab in the Preferences.
  5. Modify Format to MP3: Now change the option next to “Import Using” by clicking the drop down and selecting “MP3 Encoder”.
  6. Save Settings: Click OK out of the “Import Settings” window followed by OK again out of the “Preferences” window.
  7. Convert iTunes File:Now in any playlist or while displaying your entire library you can right click on any song and select “Create MP3 Version” to convert a file to MP3.
  8. Locate File:Typically your iTunes files are located under your “My Documents/My Music” folders in a folder titled iTunes. Once in the iTunes folder your music can be categorized numerous ways but typically is by album so navigate into the “iTunes Music” folder and then select the name of the artist and then album to locate the MP3 file. If all else fails do a search on your computer for “iTunes” to locate the iTunes folder structure.

iTunes 7.x or Lower:

  1. Open iTunes:Double click on iTunes to open the application.
  2. Open Import Settings: You will either navigate to “Edit >> Preferences >> Importing” or “Edit >> Preferences >> Advanced >> Importing”.
  3. Modify Format to MP3: Now change the option next to “Import Using” by clicking the drop down and selecting “MP3 Encoder”.
  4. Save Settings: Click OK out of the “Import Settings” window followed by OK again out of the “Preferences” window.
